How each one works

BetterSleep gives you a big shelf of ready-made sound. You tap rain, a fan or a piano into a mix and set each volume, or play a bedtime story or a meditation. Its Brainwaves tab has six binaural beat presets, from Dreamless Sleep at 2.5 Hz to Focus at 20 Hz. At night the tracker can record snoring and sleep talk.

Liminal works with the classic tools of brainwave entrainment. Send a slightly different tone to each ear and your brain perceives a beat at the difference: 200 Hz and 210 Hz becomes a 10 Hz Alpha rhythm. You can set that carrier and beat by ear, jump to a named band from Delta to Gamma, add isochronic pulses or Solfeggio tones, and layer rain, forest or drones underneath. Our guide to binaural beats and isochronic tones explains the difference between the two.

FAQ

Does BetterSleep have binaural beats?

Yes. BetterSleep has six preset binaural beats, from 2.5 Hz to 20 Hz, and plays one at a time through headphones. Liminal lets you set any carrier and beat frequency yourself.

Is BetterSleep still free?

BetterSleep's help center says it moved to a subscription in 2025. New users get a free trial, and only a small selection of content stays free after it. Liminal's free tier has no time limit.

Does Liminal track sleep?

No. Liminal makes sound and doesn't track sleep. If tracking is what you want, BetterSleep or a dedicated sleep tracker is a better fit.
