About Liminal

Hi, I'm Michael.

Founder & Head of Hertz

I make Liminal. It started as an obsession and turned into the instrument I wanted to use every night.

Why I built it

I fell down a rabbit hole studying frequencies and out-of-body experiences, and I became obsessed. Brainwave bands, binaural beats, Solfeggio tones, decades of strange and fascinating accounts: I wanted to understand all of it, and I wanted to experiment for myself.

To experiment properly, I needed to know exactly what I was listening to and be able to change it. So I built a tool that lets you dial the carrier and the beat by ear, layer sound underneath, and shape a whole session from start to finish. That tool became Liminal.

What Liminal is, and what it isn't

I'm not going to promise that a frequency will lift you out of your body or fix your sleep overnight. Some research suggests brainwaves may drift toward the rhythm of a binaural beat, but the evidence is mixed, and effects are modest and vary from person to person. You can read the details in our guides.

What I can promise is precision and honesty. You will always know what you're hearing, you can tune it yourself, and Liminal will never dress up a soundscape as a medical treatment.

How I use it

Mostly for sleep. Most nights I put on a Delta session with rain underneath, set it to fade out on its own, and I'm usually gone before it ends.

When I'm deep in a build, I'll run a Beta session at my desk to stay locked in. And on the nights I'm feeling curious, I still go back to where it all started: a slow Theta session, headphones on, lights off, just to see where my mind goes.
